Juan Carlos is the founding Chief Executive Officer of the Planetary Skin Institute on secondment from Cisco. Prior to this role, Juan Carlos led the Emerging Markets innovation team at Cisco, focusing on technology enabled national public service delivery transformation, national social/digital inclusion programs, SMB economic inclusion programs, healthcare and education.
Before joining Cisco, he was a Partner for Diamond Technology where he led the financial services and telecom practices in Latin America. He has previously worked as CEO for an innovative biotechnology start-up focused on biofuels; as an EVP Operations for a brewery group in Latin America (now SABMiller); VP for Corporate Strategic Development of a diversified financial services group and a senior consultant for McKinsey & Company.
In his tenure as a biotechnology research professional he acted as an advisor to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). He is currently a member of the Global Advisory Board for a leading global energy company; a member of the Advisory Committee of the Global Agriculture Futures program of the International Food Policy Research Institute- CGIAR; a founding member of the Governing Board of the European Institute of Technology’s Climate-KIC Foundation and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Steering Boards for Water Security, Resource Scarcity and New Energy Architecture initiatives. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Climate Change. Currently he is the Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Measuring Sustainability and a member of the board of GATD-Global Access to Technology for Development.
Juan Carlos has an MBA from INSEAD, a post-graduate degree in Biotechnology research from GBF in Germany, and M.Eng (Biochemical Engineering) and B.Eng (Chemical Engineering) from Cambridge University, UK
